Well it seems both mayoral candidates agree on at least one thing, NYC schools should be recognizing major Muslim holidays. The NY Daily News reports that both Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota agree that students should have off from school on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, two of the holiest days of the Muslim year.
Mayor Bloomberg has opposed the change in the past, arguing that city schools need more school days, not less. However, it looks like no matter who the next mayor is, Muslim holidays will be added to the school schedule, joining Jewish and Christian holidays.
"We have a growing Muslim community in the city of New York and their religion needs to be respected as all other religions are respected," Joe Lhota said on Wednesday (via NY Daily News).
"The origins of this nation (are) people of many different faiths coming together … That's why we have to respect Muslim faiths by providing the Eid school holidays for children in our school system," de Blasio said (via NY Daily News).
