More NYPD Cops Heading to the Streets

New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is moving upwards of 400 desk officers to the streets to help combat summer crime.

The New York Times reports the program known as “Summer All Out” will last 90 days and is aimed at reducing a spike in shootings.

Shootings are up 8 percent during the first six months of the year compared to 2013. Many have questioned whether reforms to the stop and frisk program have backfired and led to the increase in violence.

The additional officers will be assigned to precincts and public housing complexes to help fight crime. The NYPD has also increased overtime and sent extra cops into high crime areas of the city.

Earlier this year some in the City Council called for the hiring of an additional 1,000 police officers, but Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city couldn't afford it.
